We have previously discussed on different types of Projector Screens. However, most of our readers are confused between getting a Curved Projector Screen or the Regular Flat one. Therefore, here is a comparison between Curved Projector Screen Vs Flat Projector Screen that will help you decide which is better for you.

Curved Screens are getting soo much hype these days, whether it’s for TV, Computer Monitor, or Projector Screens. A Curved TV or Monitor does not help the user much, except for providing a better viewing experience. However, for Projectors it is different. Having a curved screen actually fulfills a purpose.

So, before we come to a conclusion on Which is Better between Curved Projector Screen Vs Flat Projector Screen, we shall understand the purpose of a Curved Screen.

Why Curved Projector Screens were introduced?

In the olden days, the aspect ratio of the Projector Screens used to be 4:3. Later, users started adopting the 16:9 screen as TV shows were recorded in the 16:9 Aspect Ratio. Even now, most TV Shows are recorded in 16:9 format.

However, in 2022, most movies are shooted in 2.35:1 format, which is also called Cinemascope or Widescreen. Therefore, most people started embracing the 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio for TVs and Projector Screens.

But, when a Projector projects the light on a widescreen, we might see the effect called pin cushioning. It happens because the Projector light does not hit the edges properly due to the widescreen. Hence, by curving the Projector Screen, the light would fall on the entire surface.

Here is a good practical example:

Suppose you placed the Projector at the center of the screen. Now, take a measurement tape and measure the distance between the center of the screen to the Projector. Let’s assume it is 12 feet.

Now, measure the distance from the Projector to the corners of the Flat Wide-Screen. The distance will be more than 12 feet. So, as a Projector projects the image, it has to reach a couple of inches more to fall on the sides of the screen. Therefore, the image brightness will be slightly less on both sides. The more wide your Projector Screen is, the more distance the light has to travel from the Projector Lens.

On the other hand, if you measure the distance from the Projector to a Curved Projector Screen, you will notice that the distance between the Projector and the Edges is 12 feet (Same as the Center of the Screen). So the light falls evenly on the entire screen.

Therefore, Curved Projector Screens are getting popular among users who watch a lot of movies on their Projector.

However, it is not suitable for Projector Screens with an Aspect Ratio of 4:3 or 16:9.

Curved Projector Screen Vs Flat Projector Screen – Which is Better?

As we have explained above, you can use a Curved Projector Screen for a 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio. Getting a Curved Projector Screen for 16:9 Ratio doesn’t do any good for you.

The screen is curved at the center approximately 3-6 inches, but it depends on how far your Projector is placed. The Projector Placement is very important while using a Curved Screen. And, you need to make sure your Projector has the Digital 4D Keystone Correction feature to correctly align the image.

Final Words:

If you watch a lot of movies, you must know that most movies are shot in 2.35: 1 ratio in 2022. For a 2.35:1 Aspect Ratio, Curved Screens are best.

However, for a 4:3 Aspect Ratio, we recommend using a Flat Screen.

And for the Aspect Ratio of 16:9, you can use either a Curved Screen or a Flat Screen. Although, a Flat Screen will be more suitable.

So, which one is better between the Curved Projector Screen Vs Flat Projector Screen in 2022? It depends on the Aspect Ratio of the screen, the screen size, and the content you are willing to watch.
